Doch dessen Führungsposition steht auf wackligen Beinen, hat es doch sein eigener machtbesessener Bruder Richard Benedict Cumberbatch ebenfalls auf den Thron abgesehen.

A lot of times, filmed Shakespearean dramas are still performed by the actors as if trying to project the back row of the theater.

Highly recommend the series! No bombastic overacting that actually clouds motivation, rather than reveal.

If you appreciate Shakespeare minus the pretention, acting at its very finest, and deft direction and camerawork, you'll be absolutely delighted by this series.

Yes, they do take a few liberties with the scripts, deleting sections presumably deemed to be superfluous for modern audiences or merely too lengthy and not central to the main themes , but in general the excisions are judicious.

All in all, this is a real treat and you'll likely want to watch it over and over again. It's true Shakespeare no modernization or cultural changes.

Seeing in real historical settings landscapes instead of onstage made the stories more powerful. Acting was superb.

Just keep in mind that Shakespeare was not always historically accurate himself, so don't rely on this to teach true history. Season 2 has Richard III portrayed more grotesquely than any other version.

A great performance by Benedict Cumberbatch, but seemed to go even beyond Shakespeare's villainizing of the king. A great watch for anyone who likes Shakespeare, or those required to watch his works.

I missed it the first time around but watched it recently before I watched the second season, recently released. I enjoy Shakespeare, but the language takes a little time to find it's rhythm in my brain.

I had no issues with understanding this, thanks to both the actors and accompanying action. I was very engrossed in all episodes but was completely entranced by Benedict Cumberbatch's Richard III, a truly evil man.

Highly recommended for wonderful acting quality, great battle scenes, superb sets and of course, it is Shakespeare! What's not to love?

This is the best Shakespeare performance I have seen so far. I absolutely love it. Shakespeare's histories are my favorite, and the political, war, and historical themes seem well represented.

They are both superb actors. See all reviews. Top reviews from other countries. I believe the first three of these have only been filmed in the old s BBC series of Shakespeare's complete works, and although the old series was at its best with its version of Henry IV, "The Hollow Crown" is far above it.

There are some interesting comments on the bonus material for Henry IV, part II that explains why the plays come across so successfully in Thea Sharrock, director of Henry V, muses that people may be shocked at hearing the actors speak in real surroundings on location , but of course, that's old hat.

Even Olivier anticipated that in with his Henry V. Moviegoers are not that easily shocked anymore. And although Hiddelston is also mistaken in his claim that it has never been done before, he is right in stating that "Shakespeare is at its best when you speak it like you're making it up.

Compellingly Shakespeare studies in detail the strengths and weaknesses of three consecutive kings. Richard II Ben Whishaw , led astray by flatterers, learns all too soon "Divine Right" offers no protection when one so alienates.

Henry IV Jeremy Irons feels doubly insecure - mindful his crown was obtained by force and all may be lost if his pleasure-loving heir continues to cavort with low life.

Henry V Tom Hiddleston is that wayward prince transformed, previous experiences allowing him the common touch that helps secure glorious victory against France.

Four discs. Four interesting bonuses. Many imaginative touches and much to provoke thought. Ben Whishaw tells how the Histories are amongst the less accessible of Shakespeare's plays, actors thus having to work that little bit harder.

A major aim has been to make the magnificent language sound as natural as possible. Film, rather than stage, gives far greater scope for nuances, so much conveyed by subtle expressions.

Fascinatingly, characters not featured prominently in print visually now have a major part to play. Slight spoiler coming up!

Only at the very end do we learn this old man has been looking back on events witnessed as the page boy we were seeing so often.

By the way, the very start of "Henry V" may unsettle some. Throughout, much is superb - full of unexpected touches that add rather than distract.

When viewed in quick succession, continuity is greatly helped by Tom Hiddleston being in both "Henry IV" and "Henry V" by happy chance, as it turns out.

Both actors are superb, but in different ways. With so much excelling, it may seem unfair to single out just one performance, but Simon Russell Beale's Falstaff may for many prove a lingering memory - especially when all his high hopes, indeed confident expectations, are so devastatingly dashed.

Movingly portrayed is the shock from which he will never recover. Great talents have converged, the result a triumph. Which of the three Kings reigned longest?

The answer may surprise you. It certainly did me. Each of them is beautifully shot and well-acted by some of the top British talent of the moment, as with all Shakespeare it will depend on how much you like the work as to how much you will get from these films.

Richard ii is a superb piece with Ben Wishaw perfectly cast as the ineffectual and inadequate king causing himself more problems with his actions and failing to conquer his feelings of low self-worth.

Finally Henry v is one of my favourite plays, and whilst I was disappointed with some of the decisions made in the adaptation it was still a good piece of tv drama.

I never bought into the portrayal of the king by Tom Hiddlestone having grown up with the Ken Branagh version, but I can appreciate that they wanted to try something different and stand away from that.

Overall this set is many hours of top class entertainment for the price of a takeaway meal, and I recommend it heartily.

I got this for Christmas and was blown away! Each director approaches the often-underloved texts with great care, getting the most out of each line and word and thus keeping the action fresh and interesting at all times.

The scenery and sets - a lot filmed on location - are breathtakingly beautiful and really add an authentic feel to the historical plays.

And finally the acting is just unbeatable. Whishaw makes Richard as pathetic, impetuous, and unwise as his performative antics suggests but ultimately gives him a dignity and grace that makes his downfall heartbreaking.

And Hiddleston is magnetic as the youthful, energetic, commanding prince and king. I cannot recommend this highly enough.

The Hollow Crown is a must for any Shakespeare lover. I picked this up as my partner is a big fan of Henry V and this looked interesting dealing with the four plays.

SOme of the joy of watching the plays was seeing all the familar excellent British actors I have loved in the plays and really enjoying themselves Julie Walters as Mrs Quickly was great I cannot recall right now the name of the actor who played Prince Henry subsequently Henry V but he is a young actor to watch out for in my opinion.

His interactions with Fallstaff and his father were well played and he carried his role with great confidence. I have seen criticisms of parts of the plays being cut and I understand how it frustrates some viewers when this happens but if you just take them as they are I think they are very fine.

My partner who is a big fan of the Branagh version of Henry V was impressed also though I think he still prefers the latter!
